{"id":1472,"date":"2017-01-26T12:37:24","date_gmt":"2017-01-26T12:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nickwood.frogwrite.co.nz\/?p=1472"},"modified":"2017-01-26T12:37:24","modified_gmt":"2017-01-26T12:37:24","slug":"blog-october-2017-to-january-2017-onwards-the-african-speculative-fiction-society-asfs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nickwood.frogwrite.co.nz\/?p=1472","title":{"rendered":"Blog \u2013 October 2016 to January 2017: Onwards The African Speculative Fiction Society (ASFS)!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Well, it\u2019s been a busy and disturbing 2016 on many levels \u2013 I\u2019ll stick mostly with the fiction, although the downturn of <strong>Trump<\/strong> and <strong>BREXIT<\/strong> are already marginalising the market of dystopian fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I mean, how bad can it get, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***** all signals down ****<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of VERY good news at least is the formation of <strong><em><strong>The African Speculative Fiction Society<\/strong><\/em><\/strong> \u2013 kudos to <strong>Geoff Ryman<\/strong> for leading on this \u2013 and nominations are already open for the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.africansfs.com\/nommos\/nominations2017\">Nommo Awards<\/a> <\/em>\u2013 for novels, short fiction, comics\/graphic novels and novellas. Nominations are due to close the end of March 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Geoff Ryman\u2019s<\/strong> series of lectures on <em>100 African SFF writers<\/em> at <strong>TOR<\/strong> has been moved on to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/strangehorizons.com\/non-fiction\/azimuth\/introducing-100-african-writers-of-sff\/\"><em>Strange Horizons<\/em><\/a><\/em>, with the next episode (3) covering South African resident SF writers.Episode 2, which focuses on UK resident writers, includes an interview with me amongst others and will stay available on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tor.com\/2016\/11\/01\/100-african-writers-of-sff-part-two-writers-in-the-u-k\/\"><strong><em>TOR.<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For comic and graphic novel lovers, I\u2019ve posted an <a href=\"http:\/\/nickwood.frogwrite.co.nz\/?p=1431\"><em>Overview on South African Comics<\/em><\/a> under my <em>SF in SA Series<\/em> (number 28!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for my own work, I was pleased to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newconpress.co.uk\/info\/book.asp?id=62&amp;referer=Hp\"><em>AZANIAN BRIDGES<\/em><\/a> make a few \u2018<em>Best SF of 2016<\/em>\u2019 summary sites and most especially in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2016\/nov\/30\/best-sf-and-fantasy-books-2016-adam-roberts\"><strong><em>The Guardian<\/em><\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/bestsciencefictionbooks.com\/blog\/15-must-have-books-for-christmas\/\"><em>Best SF Books<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apexbookcompany.com\/blogs\/frontpage\/rosewater-by-tade-thompson-is-available-now\"><em>ROSEWATER<\/em><\/a> by <strong>Tade Thompson<\/strong> was released by Apex Books late in 2016 and my 5 starred review of this book is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Rosewater-Tade-Thompson-x\/dp\/1937009297\"><strong><em>here<\/em><\/strong><\/a>: So go &#8211; Read It!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wole Talabi<\/strong>, himself a talented author \u2013 he\u2019s posted his own Hugo Award eligibility <a href=\"https:\/\/wtalabi.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/10\/2016-eligibility-post\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>: &#8211; published a 2016 Best African Short SFF list <a href=\"https:\/\/wtalabi.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/10\/my-favorite-african-science-fiction-and-fantasy-afrosff-short-fiction-of-2016\/\"><em>here<\/em><\/a>, which included my 2016 short story in <strong>OMENANA<\/strong>, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/omenana.com\/2016\/03\/25\/dream-hunter\/\"><em>Dream-Hunter<\/em><\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for 2017, I\u2019m working on a near future novel looking at <strong>WATER<\/strong> \u2013 for a great series of short stories on this theme, go to <a href=\"http:\/\/shortstorydayafrica.org\/news\/water-new-short-fiction-from-africa\"><em>Short Story Day Africa<\/em><\/a>: I\u2019m also part of a series of lectures on <strong>AFRICAN SFF<\/strong> at <em>SOAS<\/em>, the <em>University of London<\/em>.
